The UK Tier 4 Student visa was the previous visa route for those from overseas who wished to come to the UK to study. More specifically, this category consisted of the Tier 4 (General) student visa, which was broadly applicable to adult students, and the Tier 4 (Child) student visa, which was aimed at children aged between four and 17 years to enable them to undertake schooling in the UK.
Since then, the Tier 4 (General) student visa has been replaced by the Student visa, and the Tier 4 (Child) student visa has been replaced by the Child Student visa. This means that the UK Tier 4 visa route is now closed to new student applications, although it is still possible to apply to extend an existing Tier 4 student visa.
Today’s Student visa for the UK is aimed at those aged 16 or over who wish to study in the UK, and who meet certain other Home Office requirements.
If you are at least 18 years of age and are set to undertake a degree-level course, the Student visa usually enables you to stay in the UK for as long as five years. For courses that are below degree level, the visa holder can normally stay for up to two years. The exact amount of time you are allowed to stay in the UK on a Student visa will depend on the length of your course and what study you have already completed in the UK.
You may, however, have the option of staying for longer in the UK as a result of extending your Student visa. Another option could be to switch to a Graduate visa, which would entitle you to stay in the UK for at least two years after the successful completion of your course.
As a holder of the Student visa, it may also be possible for you to bring your partner and children with you to the UK as your ‘dependants’.

With regard to the Home Office’s UK Student visa financial requirements, it is expected that applicants will have sufficient money to pay their course fees, as well as to support themselves in the UK.
You will need to have enough money to pay your course fee for one academic year (up to nine months). The exact amount it will be necessary for you to pay will be stated on your Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS).

Applicants who will be boarding at a residential independent school will be required to pay boarding fees instead. The amount they will be required to pay will be set out on their CAS.
Those who have already spent at least 12 months in the UK on a valid visa will not need to prove they have sufficient money for their course fees, or to support themselves, when applying for this visa.
The term ‘Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies’, or CAS, refers to the reference number that your education provider will send to you after presenting you with an unconditioned offer for a place on their course. The education provider will need to be licensed as a student sponsor, in order to have the right to assign a CAS.
A CAS, then, is a virtual document that constitutes an official offer of a place on a course of study. Licensed student sponsors assign these documents using a secure IT system known as a Sponsorship Management System (SMS).
You will not be able to apply for a UK study visa until you have received a CAS from your education provider. The CAS shows mandatory information that the Home Office uses to determine whether an applicant has met the relevant Student visa UK requirements. This information also determines the work rights of the applicant, and whether they are entitled to bring dependants with them to the UK in the event that they are successful in their visa application.
As a candidate for the Student route visa for the UK, you will need to submit a CAS with your application. The CAS must not have been issued more than six months prior to the date you apply.
